Hello and Welcome to Happy Amnesiac, my little space on the web. You are currently looking at version 10: Long Road Home. Please take a look around and leave me any comments in the guestbook.

This blog is mainly used for updates to the site, so if you're interested in reading all about the minutia of my everyday life, you'd better go and check out the livejournal. We are powered by Blogger

Ahhh, a new season, a new design. I could write a lovely entry here about how I have "big plans for this place" but I always have big plans, and generally a small amount of time, so they rarely come to fruition. I have been putting a little effort into it recently though, so not only does the main site have a new appearence, so does Guiding Light.

I'm also fully intending to pop all the creative stuff back up here at some point, probably in its own little site, though that may take a while. So, yeah, that's where the site's at. To find out where I'm at, check the the lj, which is also only updated sporadically, though a little more often that here!

Okies, so in my...8 month absence from blogging, Blogger has become all whizz-bang up to date, and somewhat confusing. Of course, being me, I couldn't just settle for figuring out to reuse all the basics, could I? Oh no, I had to try and enable commenting and all sorts. So things may be kinda wonky for a while. But hey, at least it's better than the nothing that was here.

We are back! And better than ever! Well, actually not so different to how we were before. It took much, much longer to get this thing back online than I originally intended, This was mostly because of the Grand Computer Crash of 2003, which involved me losing nearly everything if my dear little brother hadn't stepped in and saved my hide! It's also partly because I just haven't been sure what I wanted to do with this place, I'm still not 100% sure, but I'm in the process of redesigning the entire structure, to see if that will enable updating etc.

I really just wanted to get everything back up and running first though, and to put up this poor old design that's been languishing unused since October and as I love it so I really wanted to use it. Besides, it kinda works in mid-January, still-really-cold-and-dark-in-the-evenings way, right?

I really don't use this blog enough, but I barely have the gumption to keep up one online diary, let alone two, and livejournal is just more convenient. But that doesn't stop me from redesigning this place. There'll probably be some broken links and stuff over the next couple of hours, as I rarely think through my updates in a logical manner, just try and throw everything onto the net, and hope I don't forget anything. But still, broken links can be forgiven when you can look at pretty Viggo, yes?

Seven on Sunday: Seven habits/quirky things/compulsive behavioral acts/mild insanities you'd like to free yourself of:

1. Having to do things in twos, like if I have one sweet, I need two.
2. Similarly, having to do things on both sides of my body, so if I tap the fingers of my left hand on something, I have to do it in the exact same way, only with my right hand.
3. Having to turn off wall sockets that are left on when there is no plug in them. I think one of my friends set me off on this, with no idea of what she was starting!
4. Having to eat my breakfast in the morning with a particular spoon, so if it's in the wash, I can't just have another spoon, I have to wash it up, or else "bad things will happen"
5. My night-time ritual, which isn't as bad as it used to be when I was younger. Back then I used to have to make sure that all the dining room chairs were aligned, as well as the cushions on the sofa. I also had to line up all the remote controls, and do something with the lamps, though I don't remember what. These days I just have to make sure that the lights are off in rooms no-one else is going to go in for the night.
6. The way me and my mother say goodbye, we have to kiss once on one cheek, then the other, then back to the first. Then we have to blow a kiss goodbye. We've done it ever since I was little, and it's one that's held on. It gets a bit embarassing sometimes, like if she's dropping me off at work, but mostly I don't mind it so much.
7. I would also like to just generally stop having panic attacks. I don't get them that often, but they're still awful things. I hate the loss of control they bring with them, and they always come up unexpectedly.

I'm sure there are some I've forgotten. Although, thinking about it, I'm definitely better than when I was younger, I used to have a lot of little "quirks" back then. At least now I don't turn every little thing into some kind of ritual.

Hmm, whenever I'm away from the net for a while I start to think that when I come back, it will have changed in some way. Like it will have moved on in my absence, which is, of course, not the case. Which probably explains why I'm ina "stupid internet. why are you soooo boooring" mood. I've read all my dailies, and just can't seem to find anything inspiring. Admittedly I haven't looked that hard, but still, it starts to bring you down.

I did find this little quiz thang at Wanderlost.Org which I thought I'd fill in.

1.) Do you read often? How many books would you say you read in a year? Do you read magazines?

Yes, I read a lot (onr of the benefits of working in a bookshop!) I would guess that, on average, I probably read about 40 books a year, maybe more. I mean, because I've been ill this last week, I've gotten through about 4 books, but normally I'll take about a week to read a book. And I'll have dry-spells, where I just won't feel like reading. I read some magazines, maybe 3 a month, sometimes more, if I'm on a borong lunchbreak.

2.) When you read, what type of books do you read? What type of magazines? What are some of your favorite books or magazines?

I mostly read science fiction: Iain Banks; Neil Gaiman; Jeff Noon; Alastair Reynolds are my current favourites. I'll read the occasional classic, just to kind of stretch myself. I also enjoy some older children's literature, kicked off mainly by Harry Potter and His Dark Materials. Sometimes kid's books explore themes in a way adults books just can't, and it's nice to escape to that world sometimes. I read some straight, popular fiction, and occasionally dabble in biographies too.

3.) If you read, why do you think you read? If you don't, why not?

Well, I've always read, ever since I was little I've loved books, and reading and writing. I don't do so much of the writing these days, but I still love to read. I feel it's an escape, to other worlds and places (especially with the Sci-fi.) I also enjoy learning about new things, seeing things from perspectives I'd never considered before, and experiencing things through books that, for whatever raeson, I can't in real life.

4.) Did you read a lot as a child? What are some of your favorite books from childhood?

Yeah, I read all the time, though I can't remember that many favourites. I loved all the Arthur Ransome books, which were about a group of children who went on sailing holidays, and set their own camp on an island. That appealed to the explorer in me. I also loved the Wizard of Oz books, they were often slightly surreal but always interesting. I can only really remember series of books that I enjoyed, not so much the one offs.

5.) When do you read? Do you read in specific places? (If so, where?)

Well, my work hours dictate that a little, (despite many misconceptions, people who work in bookshops, can't spend all their time reading!) Mostly in bed, either first thing in the morning, if I wake up in time, or late at night. If I'm reading a really good book, I'll make time for it. I can read pretty much anywhere, but If I can choose, either in bed, or in my comfy chair in my room.

6.) Last question: How do you choose books to read?

Well, some of it is based simply on the fact that I know of the author, have read other stuff by them, and know I want to read more. If I'm browsing for books, I'll read the blurb on the back, see what the comments are (if there are any) and who they're from. People say to never choose a book by it's cover, but it's hard when your confronted by a whole shelf-load of books, not to be drawn to anything that looks striking or unusual. Again, my work gives me an advantage in this area, as I can look at the books when they come into the shop, and i'm puttiing them away.

There, that's my reading habits laid bare!

Squeee! Okay, what with being ill for the past week (food poisoning - don't ask!), I almost completely missed Happy Amnesiac's first birthday! It came into being on the 17th January 2002 and it's still here, and hopefully will be for the next few years! Even though I don't update here as often as I maybe should, I do love having this place, to keep all my webstuff, and to redesign when I feel the need. It's nice to have something that I created, under my own steam, that other people can see.

Anyway, I'm going to go back to feeling ill and sorry for myself now! So I'll finish with Happy Birthday Happy Amnesiac!!
